TEA ROOM

Refurbishment 2023

Since the Castle reopened in 2014, the Tea Room has always been let on a concessionary licence to other companies. This has proved quite complicated at times, has only provided a minimal income for the Castle and has meant that the Trust has only had a narrow say in how things are run.

Going forward, we have the opportunity to take the Tea Room in-house and run it ourselves, creating a much bigger income to reinvest into the Castle, creating a more sustainable future and providing a better quality of experience for our visitors. As the Castle is unfunded by any other body, we rely on the income we make from visitors and events to enable the Castle to stay open to the public and to carry out all the necessary maintenance needed.

Help us bring a new enhanced experience to the Castle!

Please donate and help reestablish the Tea Room!

Rewards in return for donation:

  • £5 - free tea or coffee on your first visit

  • £15 - claim a free Cream Tea for Two

  • £60 - sit at a table with your name on it

  • £100 - nominate a school or youth group for a free Educational Visit for one class (Max 30 children)

The Benefits

Bringing the Tea Room in-house will not only allow us to bring together the visitor experience throughout the whole Castle and give us a much more sustainable income but will also give us the opportunity to:

  • Create job opportunities at London Living Wage or above

  • Create more volunteering opportunities

  • Create the ability to offer work experience placements

  • Recreate the food and beverage offer, bringing a broader, changing menu, with ingredients sourced locally, supporting local small businesses and the local economy

  • Be able to bring the whole building into more use during the week, creating community use opportunities for meetings and groups

  • Cut down the impact on the local environment by addressing litter problems

  • Bring back cream tea bookings

Our Challenge

But being unfunded and having had no regular income for 2 years, whilst being closed for Covid means we need a little help.

After 9 years of continued use by varying companies, we have been left with a Tea Room that needed deep cleaning and refitting. Local trades and businesses have come together to help us clean, paint and repair, but now we need to raise the funds to re-equip the kitchen and servery.

Our original cost projection was about £7,500, but now it is empty we realise there is more to be done than we thought and is nearer to £10,000. Searching, applying and waiting for grant outcomes could take months and we don't know if we would be successful even then, so we are kicking off with crowd funding to open back up to the community as soon as possible. We are hoping to divert some funding from elsewhere but that will take a while even so.

With your help, we can really ensure the next stage of Severndroog history really sets the Castle up to remain in the community for the next 238 years!
